Coning of Wheel

The wheels are conned at a slope of 1 in 20 to prevent from rubbing the inner face of the rail and to prevent lateral movement of the axle. This is known as coning of wheel.

1. Life of the sleeper and rail is increased.

3. Coning the wheels reduces the depreciation of the wheel runs and rail.

4. Coning also gives an option of lateral drift of the hinge with is wheels.

5. Coning also prevents, to some extent, the sleeping of the wheels.

6. It helps the vehicle to negotiate a curve smoothly.

7. It gives smooth riding.

8. It reduces wear and tear of the wheel flanges.
