1. Animal cart

Cart driven by buffaloes, bullocks are used for refuse transportation in small towns and cities. It is used for short distance. The capacity of cart is 1m³

2. Short range diesel vehicle

As a substitute of for animal cart for short distance, a small capacity diesel vehicle is now widely used. The capacity of such vehicle varies from 1-1.5t

3. Tractor trailer

Because of low initial and operational cost, tractors are used in medium size town and cities. It consists of trailer, which hauled by tractor. Sometime tractor can also be used to pull two or more trailers at a time for economical operation.

4. Three wheeler autorickshaws

Such types of vehicles with closed body are in use in some cities where the transportation distance is not so large. Because of its low capacity and are mostly petrol operated, the cost of transportation will be high.

5. Electric vehicle

These are the battery operated vehicles used in some developed countries and can be operated over a shout radius of about 2kms. The battery has to be charged overnight. In India and some other developing countries, these vehicles are available only to a limited extend due to its high capital cost.

6. Dumper placer

These units are used for lifting large size containers. The vehicle is provided with winch mechanism due to which the container is hoisted and place on the body of the truck.

7. Truck

It the most common type of vehicle used for the refuse transportation in most of the cities in India and other developing countries. The capacity of truck varies from 5-7 tonnes. The vehicle should be provided with tipping gear arrangement and collapsible sides for quick unloading in order to increase the number of trip.

8. Compaction vehicle

The main function of these vehicle is to compact the refuse, which results in increasing the density of refuse. In developing countries, as the density of refuse is less, the compaction vehicles are used.

9. Rail transport

When refuse is to be transported to a large distance, as in some metropolitan cities, this form of transport can be used. Rail transport is economical when large quantity is to be transported over a long distance.

10. Special municipal vehicle

It consists of truck provided with special hydraulic arrangement for lifting, placing and unloading of 8-10 cubic meter container truck chassis. The special type of container is kept at a specific site.
